Building An Ethical Brand

March 4, 2018 Kate Wainwright

Looking after our planet is something that has always been on my radar and as time goes on I am becoming more and more keen to reduce my carbon footprint where possible and live more kindly. Recycling, being conscious of packaging, steering clear of animal products, using products that aren’t tested on animals or making products myself are just some of the ways to do this from day to day. Another way is through supporting slow fashion and moving away from disposable fashion that will last one season and then fall apart. Some think this is more expensive and is many cases it is, but in the long run I believe supporting brands who produce products with good ethics, treating workers fairly and sourcing materials sustainably won't cost much different, the products are usually much better quality and last alot longer.

Anyway, I didn't set out to preach or start a debate, I wanted to share how I have been applying these thoughts to the jewellery I make. Recently I realised that I had not been doing enough to bring these ethics to my brand, and over the last few months I have been making changes in the following three ways;

Recycled Materials. I use products made from recycled materials where-ever possible and ensure they are sustainably sourced from trustworthy companies who also see the importance in this. For example, all the silver I use is 100% recycled silver and comes with  certificate of authenticity.

Ethically Sourced Gemstones. I source gemstones that have been ethically mined and are of high quality. The gemstone supplier I use has strict policies around their own suppliers and the standards they have to meet including working conditions and proof of this.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse.  Any by products of jewellery production will be reused or recycled where possible. Any packaging is sustainably sourced and recyclable or biodegradable. I ask that my customers please play their part and recycle or reuse any packaging sent to them responsibly.

One last thing... As my tools wear wear out I will replace them with tools not using animal products and I shall ensure any products I use are vegan and environmentally friendly where possible.

I am really interested if you are a  small business owner is this something that is important to you? I would love to hear what steps you take and if you can think of anything I can improve on!
